Higher Response Database Analysis

The secret method, which determines whether your next direct marketing campaign will succeed or fail, is primarily based on the database you are or are not using.

The 1) List, 2) Copy and 3) Offer are the three major components of every successful direct marketing campaign, whether it's via the mail, on the Internet or another medium. In order for your campaign to succeed, it must first reach an audience predisposed to purchasing your products or services. Therefore, the selection of an audience - the "list," is by far the most important aspect of any direct marketing campaign.

You can sell almost anything to a good list and the opposite is equally true -- you can barely sell anything (even the highest quality or "greatest" product) to a bad list.

Today there are several popular methods in which to analyze and segment a list. Some current examples are:

  • Demographic method: segments a list based upon basic demographic criteria like: income, age, quantity of kids in household and/or geographical location, etc.

After this has been done or at least begun satisfactorily, the next best list to expand your business is usually a list of people who have bought a similar product as yours but from one of your competitors. However, most companies are not very successful in getting access to their competitor's customer files.

So what is a company to do? Well, the only real option is to purchase an outside list from someone who has a list which you believe has a very similar purchasing behavior as with your own customer list. But how can you know if this independent list will favorably match up with your client database buying behavior, before you spend thousands of dollars just to test their list?

To choose the right list, regardless of whether you're selling business to business, business to consumer or both, you first need to eliminate all lists with groups who are least likely to buy your products or services while at the same time correctly identifying the lists with groups who are most likely to become your customers.
